Ionic Channels in Excitable Membranes

Spring Semester 2007

580.425/580.632

Dept. of Biomedical Engineering

Course Description:

Ionic channels are key signaling molecules that support electrical communication throughout the body. As such, these channels are a central focus of active research as it relates to neuroscience, computational biology, biophysics, and drug discovery. This course carefully introduces the quantitative framework (biophysics, stochastics, and mathematical models), optical imaging approaches (FRET), and atomic structural strategies (X-ray crystallography) used to understand ion channel function. Development of these topics will provide a deep understanding of the interrelation of ionic channels to a broad range of biological and engineering fields.

Suggested background:

Introductory biology and physics, differential equations, and elementary probability. Ideal for senior BME undergraduates or starting graduate students (BME, Neuroscience, Biophysics, Physiology).

Instructor: David Yue (dyue@bme.jhu.edu)

Anouncements (most recent postings are first):

The final exam will be posted at 5:00pm on Tuesday, May 8th and will be due at 5:00pm on Wed, May 9th in room 709 Traylor. (Talbot Library)

We will meet in Talbot Library - Room 707 Traylor on Friday 4/13/07.

Class will be in the West Room on April 12 - this is right around the corner from BRB G01 in the Turner concourse. (this is NOT the West Auditorium in PCTB)

The new date for the final exam will be May 9

Check your final exam schedules and bring them to class on Thursday 4/5 so we can discuss whether it's necessary to reschedule the final for Ion Channels.

There will be no class on Friday March 2.

Those of you enrolled in the 632 version of the course should plan on meeting for a few min. after class on Thursday (2/22) to assign papers for your presentations.

The room for Thursday Feb. 22 has changed - we will now meet in G05 - just down the hall from where we had been.

Reminder: class will not meet on Friday 1/26/07.  We will meet again on Thursday 2/1/07 in BRB G01.
